Production growth in the past decade

Production of chlorine grew in the past decade in other Asian countries despite an important decrease of Japanese output. The indices of the main “Other Asian” producing countries are summarized in the illustration below.

Future Growth of the “Other Asian” Chloralkali Industry

Future growth of chlor-alkali production is expected for almost all other Asian countries with announcements of additional production capacities.


Chandra Asri and INA signed a memorandum of understanding to pursue the joint development of a world-scale chlor-alkali plant in Jakarta, Indonesia. Once operational, the plant will produce more than 400,000 metric tons per annum of caustic soda.


Japanese AGC announced to expand its chlor-alkali capacity in Thailand.
The capacity increase is planned at two manufacturing sites in Thailand, and the start of operation is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. With this expansion, AGC’s annual production capacity of chlor-alkali products in Southeast Asia will increase by 220,000 tonnes.

South Korea

Kumho Mitsui Chemicals is currently investing in the expansion of its methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) production capacity by 200,000 tons.
